Inclusive hiring begins with the role

Clear requirements make a job description easier to evaluate.

Describe the work that matters

List the responsibilities and the skills actually needed to perform them. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences that can be learned on the job. Avoid using an unnecessarily narrow career history as a proxy for capability. For roles in regulated environments, verify genuine eligibility or access requirements with the relevant adviser.

Use a consistent evaluation

Prepare the same work-related questions for candidates applying to the same role and document how responses are assessed. Explain the interview process in advance and offer a way to discuss reasonable adjustments. Inclusive recruitment is a practice to maintain, not a claim justified by a photograph or a slogan. Review where applicants encounter unnecessary barriers.

A short working checklist

  • Separate essential skills from learnable preferences.
  • Use consistent work-related questions.
  • Make the process and adjustment contact clear.
