Prepare questions before seeking finance

Different funding arrangements create different obligations.

Describe the business need

Before approaching a potential funding source, be clear about what the money would support, when it would be used and which operating assumptions it depends on. A credible description includes uncertainties and the plan for monitoring them. Do not assume that a general small-business program is available to every cannabis-related activity; eligibility and restrictions require specific verification.

Understand the proposed arrangement

Debt, equity and other arrangements have different consequences for payment, ownership and control. Ask qualified advisers to explain the documents and risks of the actual proposal. This article does not recommend an investment or a funding product. The practical preparation is organizational: consistent records, an understandable operating plan and a list of questions that need answers before commitments are made.

A short working checklist

  • Explain the purpose and timing of the funding need.
  • Check program and sector eligibility directly.
  • Ask advisers about ownership, control and obligations.
